FORECO Daily: Fire renewal

IMG_2393.JPG

Seedlings of Table Mountain Pine (Pinus rigida) carpet the forest floor following the November 2016 wildfire in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Table Mountain Pine is a fire-dependent species, with cones that only open after the heat of a fire. Pine forests have declined throughout the southern mountains due to a long-time policy of fire suppression since European settlement. These seedlings promise hope for our southern Appalachian pine forests.
