FORECO Daily: Pitcher plants

IMG_2631

Alan Weakley splits open one of the modified mountain pitcher plant leaves to show our students the micro-ecosystem inside. This rare carnivorous species (Sarracenia purpurea var. montana), found in southern Appalachian bogs, contains specialized mosquito larvae, which are resistant to the pitcher plant’s digestive juices, at the top of the food chain. The new Mountain Bogs National Wildlife Refuge will help conserve rare species such as these as well as the other flora and fauna on which they depend.
